There are a few different kinds of pests you may see during the fall season. Since the temperatures are starting to cool down, insects and other pests are seeking places to hunker down for the winter. Keep an eye out for these pests this season:

What kind of bugs come out in the fall?

Bed Bugs

According to a 2018 survey conducted by the National Pest Management Association, 97% of pest control professionals had treated bed bugs in the past year. One of the most common signs of bed bugs are bite marks—many people will report bed bugs after finding bites or red welts on their skin. Bed bugs are commonly found in mattresses and bed frames, but have also been spotted on stuffed animals, on bedside lamps, and couches.

Rodents

House mice and Norway rats are some of the more common rodents you’ll see in your home this fall and winter. Once the temperatures start to dip, rodents can cause damage to your home as they chew or claw through cabinet doors, carpets, baseboards, and other areas, attempting to gain access to your home.

Brown Recluse

The brown recluse is most commonly found throughout the Midwest and Southwestern United States. This spider is known for its secretive nature, so you may not actually spot any brown recluses if you have them—they’re likely to hide out in dark corners of your garage or an outdoor shed and only bites if its feeling threatened. The brown recluse has a venomous bite that can cause severe allergic reactions in children, the elderly, or those with preexisting medical conditions.

What attracts pests to your home?

The availability of food and water is the most common reason a bug or rodent may start to call your home their own. Excessive moisture is one of the most common reasons a home could face an infestation, so it’s important to check any plumbing for leaks and your crawlspaces for wood decay or other signs of water and water damage.
