Bed Bugs

Bed bugs have round bodies with six legs and claws that protrude from the end of each leg. Fully grown bed bugs are quite tiny, and most of them are smaller than five millimeters long. This is small enough to cover the date inscribed on a coin. They bite into the flesh of sleeping humans, and they may also feed on the blood of animals, rodents and birds. They usually lay eggs in bed linings after a meal, and these eggs can hatch within two weeks. Bed bugs hide in tiny crevices and cracks during the daytime, and they feed during the night by injecting a serum as they bite. This numbs the local area and allows them to remain undetected. Although their bites can cause swelling, itching and infection, these bugs do not carry diseases that are harmful to human beings.

Ants have segmented bodies that are usually black, brown or red. Some ants have multiple colors. There are variations in the sizes and shapes of these segments. Ants normally have six legs, and they have paired antennae, which protrude from the head. Ants may form colonies inside of the home, but they may enter the building from the outside as well. Ant colonies are difficult to control, so professional assistance is often required.

Ants are seasonal critters, and they tend to infest homes and businesses during the hot summer months. They build nests in the walls, attics and basement areas of the home, and they often emerge from these hiding places to look for food and water. There are several different species of ants found in the areas in Southeast Virginia , Richmond and in the surrounding areas of Hampton Roads.

Termites have soft, translucent bodies with wings. They are divided into castes, which include workers, soldiers, breeders and royalty. Like ants, termites also form colonies, and they can hide in the soil as well as the hidden areas within a home or business. They are capable of causing extreme damage to any material made from wood. They can build elaborate tunnels to quickly escape detection, so they often remain for extended periods of time without being noticed by humans. Because of this, extensive property damage is often done before their presence becomes visible.
