Why the Virginia Beach Climate is a "Goldmine" for Rodents

Unlike colder northern climates where activity slows down in the winter, our local winters rarely eliminate rodent populations. Instead of hibernating, rodents simply look for a warmer place to spend the night, which often means your attic or crawl space. Properties near the Lynnhaven River, Back Bay, or other low-lying marshlands frequently experience higher pressure during heavy rain cycles. As water levels rise, rodents seek higher, drier ground, which leads them directly toward your foundation.

Mice and rats are opportunistic; they utilize overhanging tree limbs like a highway to reach your roofline, squeeze through gaps in older vinyl siding, and even follow infrastructure utility lines to move undetected from the outdoors into your home. In a city where many homes are built on crawl spaces, the damp, dark environment under your floorboards provides an ideal nesting ground that can go unnoticed until the population has already grown.

Meet the Local Intruders: Common Rodents in the Tidewater Area

We primarily deal with three types of intruders, each requiring a different strategy for removal. Identifying the specific species is the first step in our process, as a plan for a ground-dwelling rat won't be as effective for a pest nesting in your rafters.

• The House Mouse. These small pests can fit through a hole the size of a dime. They are prolific breeders and can quickly contaminate kitchen cabinets and pantry areas.
• The Norway Rat.  These are heavy-bodied, aggressive burrowers. They prefer to stay low to the ground, often inhabiting crawl spaces or digging networks of tunnels under concrete slabs and sheds.
• The Roof Rat. A common sight in more wooded neighborhoods, Roof Rats are agile climbers. They are usually the culprits when you hear scratching sounds coming from the attic or see them running along power lines.

While many view a mouse in the house as a minor nuisance, rodents are known carriers of various pathogens. However, in our region, the physical damage they cause is often the most immediate threat. Because a rodent’s teeth never stop growing, they must gnaw on hard surfaces to keep them filed down.

This frequently includes the electrical wiring inside your walls. Chewed wires are a leading cause of house fires, making rodent control a vital part of home safety. Furthermore, their droppings and urine can contaminate insulation and air ducts, leading to poor indoor air quality and potential respiratory issues for your family or employees.

How to Tell If You Have an Active Infestation

Early detection is the best way to prevent expensive repairs down the road. 

Keep an eye (and ear) out for these common local indicators:

• Visual signs. Dark, rice-shaped droppings or "rub marks" along baseboards, greasy smudge marks caused by the oils in a rodent's fur as they travel the same paths.
• Auditory clues. Scratching, scurrying, or squeaking sounds in the ceiling or wall voids, which are usually most noticeable at night.
• Physical damage. Gnaw marks on food packaging, wooden structures, or plastic pipes.
• Nesting material. Finding shredded paper, fabric, or dried plant matter tucked away in a dark, quiet corner of the garage or basement.
