Identifying the Nest Around Your Property

Virginia properties may encounter two insects commonly described as hornets. Bald-faced hornets are technically a type of aerial yellowjacket, while European hornets are true hornets. Correct identification matters because their nesting behavior and treatment requirements differ.

Common signs and nesting locations include:

• Bald-Faced Hornets: These black-and-white insects build enclosed, gray paper nests that often resemble a football. Nests typically hang in trees, shrubs, under eaves, or near soffits and can house several hundred workers at their seasonal peak.
• European Hornets: These large brown-and-yellow hornets may establish colonies in hollow trees, attics, wall voids, or other protected spaces.
• Active Flight Paths: Repeated movement to and from a single opening can indicate a concealed nest inside an eave, wall, or attic.

Both insects can sting more than once because they don’t leave a barbed stinger behind. Don’t strike the nest, block its entrance, or spray it from close range.

Our Hornet Control Process

Our technicians begin with a thorough on-site assessment. We inspect visible activity and potential nesting areas, including trees, eaves, wall voids, and other sheltered spaces, to locate the nest and confirm the species before any treatment begins.

Our service follows a targeted process:

• Inspect: We evaluate hornet activity, flight paths, nest placement, and accessible areas around the property.
• Identify: We confirm the species before formulating a treatment plan.
• Treat: We develop a custom integrated pest management strategy for the nest and can use environmentally friendly products that are intended for use around children and pets.
• Recommend: After addressing the active nest, we assess surrounding conditions and may recommend sealing entry points or adjusting landscaping to reduce future activity.
