Fire Ant Control in Virginia Beach

QualityPro-Accredited Care for Mounds & Hidden Fire Ant Colonies

Fire ant mounds can turn lawns, walkways, and play areas into hazards for your family and pets. When disturbed, these ants swarm quickly and can sting repeatedly. We treat fire ants as a distinct pest with a two-step approach that addresses visible mounds and colonies hidden across the property.

We’re a locally owned Virginia Beach pest control company with licensed and insured technicians. Before creating a plan for your property, we identify the ant species and evaluate where colonies may be active. We’re also QualityPro accredited, a national pest management credential with documented standards for technician training, customer service, business operations, and environmentally responsible practices.

Why Fire Ants Are a Serious Concern in Virginia Beach

Red imported fire ants were first detected in Virginia near a Hampton golf course in 1989 and later spread through Hampton Roads. Virginia Beach has been part of the state’s imported fire ant quarantine since 2009. The quarantine restricts the movement of materials that could carry the pest, including soil, sod, and hay, unless they meet applicable certification requirements.

Fire ants forage most actively when soil temperatures range from approximately 70 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The Tidewater region’s climate can support extended activity from spring into fall, giving colonies more time to spread through sunny lawns, landscaped areas, and pavement edges.

Disturbing a mound can cause workers to swarm and sting repeatedly. Stings commonly produce a burning sensation, raised welts, and white pustules. Some people may experience a serious allergic reaction that requires prompt medical attention.

How to Recognize an Active Fire Ant Mound

A fire ant mound usually resembles a dome of loose, fluffy soil without a visible opening on top. The ants enter and leave through underground tunnels extending from the mound’s sides, so the colony may remain unnoticed until someone disturbs the soil.

Signs that may indicate an active fire ant colony include:

  • Dome-shaped soil: A mound develops in an open, sunny area without a central entrance hole.
  • Rapid swarming: Numerous reddish-brown ants emerge quickly when the soil is disturbed.
  • Climbing behavior: Workers move up shoes, tools, or other vertical surfaces before stinging.
  • Multiple lawn mounds: New domes appear around walkways, utility boxes, patios, or play areas.

Not every large mound belongs to red imported fire ants. Native species such as the Alleghany mound ant can build similar structures but require different handling. Our technicians confirm the pest before choosing a treatment.

How Our Two-Step Fire Ant Treatment Works

We combine broadcast bait application with individual mound treatment when appropriate. Each method has a different purpose, allowing us to address both visible activity and colonies that haven’t produced an obvious mound.

Our two-step approach includes:

  • Broadcast bait application: We distribute bait across the treatment area while ants are actively foraging. Workers collect it and carry it back into the colonies.
  • Individual mound treatment: We directly treat surviving or high-priority mounds, particularly those near patios, walkways, entrances, and play areas.
  • Monitoring: We check ongoing activity because the bait must reach the colony and queen before its full effects take hold.

Boiling water, gasoline, grits, and similar home remedies don’t provide dependable colony control. They can damage the property, create safety hazards, or cause surviving ants to relocate. Professional baiting works with the ants’ natural foraging and food-sharing behavior to reach the colony.

Every property receives a customized plan based on the location and extent of the activity. Through integrated pest management, we combine accurate identification, targeted product selection, treatment, and monitoring. We also select environmentally friendly products with children and pets in mind.
